Care Following the Placement of Dental Implants
Following the placement of a dental implant, you will have an abutment protruding through the gum tissue. On the first day, you must avoid disturbing the wound by rinsing, spitting, or touching it.
Some swelling is normal after surgery. You can minimize swelling by applying an ice bag on the cheek in the area of surgery. For 36 hours, apply ice as much as possible.
Bleeding
You may experience some bleeding for 24 hours. If you experience excessive bleeding for more than 30 minutes, please contact us for further instructions. Normally profuse bleeding can be controlled when you gently bite on the gauze pad as directed, directly on the wound for 30 minutes.

Diet
Avoid hot liquids or food. Drink plenty of water. The day of surgery soft food is required. You can begin your regular diet when you feel comfortable doing so. Follow your Drs. instructions.
Pain medication should be taken when the local anesthetic wears off.
- Moderate pain is controlled by one or two tablets of Tylenol or Extra Strength Tylenol every 3-4 hours.
- Ibuprofen (Advil or Motrin) can replace Tylenol if you prefer. 2-3 200 mg. tablets four times a day, do not exceed 3200 mg daily for an adult.
- Consult our practice for individuals under 18. Do not take the two medications at the same time.
- Severe pain is treated by prescribed medication taken as directed.
- Do not take these medications if you have been instructed differently by your doctor.
- Do not drive an automobile or work around machinery.
- Avoid alcoholic beverages.
Following surgery, you will find that pain and discomfort subside a little more every day. If the pain lasts longer than you think it should, please contact the office.
Antibiotics
You must take the prescribed antibiotics as directed to help prevent infection. Be sure to finish the full prescription.

Oral Hygiene
To heal properly, you must pay attention to good oral hygiene. You will be given a prescribed oral rinse to use the night of surgery before bed. Use Peridex twice daily the following day after breakfast and before bed. The rinse must last for at least 30 seconds before you spit it out. Also, Rinse 4-5 times each day with warm salt water ( 1 teaspoon salt to 1 cup water), especially after meals. You may still brush your teeth, being very gentle around the healing abutments at first.
Activity
Minimize physical activities immediately following surgery to avoid throbbing or bleeding.

Wearing your Prosthesis
Do not wear any prosthesis for at least ten days following surgery.
